Converging Space, Hougang

Design is an exercise in bridging eras. For a family rooted in Singapore for over two decades, Converging Space began with two distinct provocations: a deep cultural emphasis on academic pursuit and a desire to preserve a high-quality, vintage teakwood staircase—a relic of 1980s craftsmanship.

Adopting a conservational mindset, we abstained from the conventional urge to modernize the staircase. Instead, we treated it as a living organism. At the mid-landing, a triangular cabinet extends like "new growth" from the original timber, integrating modern technology within a vintage frame. This angular logic defines the entire residence. A diagonal threshold-cabinet cuts across the floor plan, acting as both a privacy screen and a polygonal portal that transforms the stairwell into a soaring, triangular courtyard.

By replacing right angles with ergonomic diagonals, the main living area is reimagined as a dynamic study sanctuary. Cascading bookshelves and slanted transitions facilitate easier movement and varied perspectives, steering the family away from individual rooms and into a shared, collective environment. Converging Space proves that intentional design can still command physical awareness, returning the mind to the "here and now" through the power of sculpted geometry.
