Spatial Corners, Clementi Ridges

Residential design finds its soul in the quality of intimacy. In this Singapore residence, we encountered a common architectural challenge: a perfectly square living and dining area that felt homogeneous and lacking in private refuge. Drawing inspiration from Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, we sought to break this uniformity by crafting ""spaces within a space.""

Our intervention utilizes light and shadow as structural tools. By treating the bedroom corridor as a light source, we cast diagonal transitions across the primary corners of the home. These areas are further differentiated through a tonal palette of light greys, contrasting with the expansive white surfaces of the main volume. This layering adds a nuanced depth to the apartment, evolving into a distinctive spatial language that skews the study room walls and creates a tapered vestibule for the master suite.

This geometric logic is echoed at every scale, from the structural layout down to the diagonal motifs of drawer pulls and wardrobe handles. By eschewing the rectilinearity of the original plan for a series of articulated, skewed lines, the design achieves a sense of gradation and richness. Spatial Corners transforms a static square into a dynamic sanctuary, where every corner offers a newfound sense of enclosure and hidden refuge.
